How to Use the Inspire Pro Auto-Locking Tuners

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to use the auto-locking tuners on your Inspire Pro, from removing a broken string to installing a new one and understanding how the locking mechanism works.

ENYA Inspire Pro auto-locking tuner workshop introduction

The Inspire Pro AL, SD, and Artist Signature Series all feature custom 18:1 auto-locking tuners. Unlike a conventional tuner, this mechanism secures the string as you bring it up to pitch. Once you understand how it works, changing a string becomes much more straightforward.

Getting Started

Understanding the Auto-Locking Mechanism

The key difference is that the string is held in place by a built-in locking mechanism. That means removing a broken string requires one extra step: you need to release the lock before pulling the string free.

You’ll only need a small tool to operate the mechanism. A 0.7 mm pick or a flathead screwdriver will work, so have one ready before you begin.

What You'll Need

Part 01

Releasing a Broken String

If a string breaks at the tuner, resist the urge to pull it straight out. The locking mechanism may still be holding it in place, so the string needs to be unlocked first.

Look for the slot in the tuner and align your pick or flathead screwdriver with it. Turn the tool counterclockwise using gentle pressure. The lock should release, allowing you to remove the broken string without forcing it.

The important thing is to let the mechanism do the work. A small, controlled turn is all that’s needed; avoid applying unnecessary force.

Part 02

Installing a New String

With the old string removed, you can fit the replacement. Thread the new string through from the back of the guitar, leave a suitable length, and then pass it through the tuner.

If you’re unfamiliar with the string-changing process itself, check out our earlier workshop guide on how to restring your guitar before continuing.

Part 03

Let the Tuner Lock the String as You Tune

Once the new string is threaded through, begin tuning it up to pitch. Watch the locking mechanism as you turn the tuner: you’ll notice that it rotates at a different speed from the tuner knob.

This movement comes from the gear ratio between the locking mechanism and the tuner structure. As the string tightens, the mechanism gradually advances, much like an invisible screwdriver tightening the lock for you. When the string reaches a certain tension, the locking mechanism completes the lock.

In other words, the locking action is part of the tuning process itself. Bring the string up to pitch and allow the mechanism to engage naturally rather than trying to force the lock into place by hand.

A Helpful Reminder

Pay attention to how the mechanism moves while tuning. Once the string is secured, there’s no need to keep tightening it.

Final Check

Check the Lock Without Over-Tightening

Once the string reaches pitch and the locking mechanism engages, verify that the string is firmly held. If you want extra peace of mind, you can use your tool to gently check the mechanism clockwise. However, if it already feels snug, do not force it any further.

Finish tuning to standard pitch, and your guitar is ready to play. The entire process is quick and reliable once you let the tuner do the locking work for you.
