Daisuke Abe & Friends:
A Midnight Shrine Session with the Enya Inspire
What happens when flesh-and-blood humans perform music born from AI?
On a freezing midnight at a historic shrine in Hachioji, the air was filled with the scent of woodsmoke and the glow of dancing bonfires. It was a rare, immersive setting for a performance by jazz guitarist Daisuke Abe, alongside bassist and vocalist Kuriko Tsugawa and drummer Kan Izumi. Together, they created a night where breath turned white and digital-born music met human warmth.
The melody they performed, "Kaitakusha" (Pioneer), is an AI-composed track by Kagebou.
As the notes began to mingle with the crackle of the fire, the digital-born melody took on a human resonance. It was a night where digital craft met human warmth, transforming an AI-composed track into a vibrant, shared experience.
Behind the Scenes: The Warmth of a Frozen Night
While the final film feels like a dream, the story behind it is really about the warmth of the Hachioji community.
A nearby construction company welded the torch stands, and local children helped clear the shrine grounds. The team even spent the night before handcrafting the torches, using solid fuel to ensure the thick wood would glow steadily through the winter night.
The musicians began the day with a quiet greeting at the shrine.
The local volunteer fire corps stood by to manage the bonfires, while neighbors who had seen the flyers dropped by to watch. A local florist brought cherry blossoms, and others brought along provisions to help the team through the night.
By the time the cameras rolled, the cold was biting. Breath turned white. Fingers felt like sticks. "I had no sensation of holding the pick," Daisuke recalled. Despite the challenging conditions, the team stayed to complete the performance, supported by the community standing with them in the dark.
The Guitar That Needed Nothing Else
At the end of the performance video, Daisuke pointed to his guitar and said:
Then he added:
That's the Enya Inspire in its element. It has a built-in speaker and effects — no amp, no cables, no setup. Just turn it on and play.
Watching Daisuke and his team work through the biting cold makes you appreciate the final performance even more. We're proud that our instrument could be part of something this honest and this well made.
