How to Replace the Inspire Potentiometers

In this guide, we’ll show you how to replace the two potentiometers on your Inspire smart guitar.

The Inspire features two potentiometers with different sizes and installation methods. Before starting the replacement process, we recommend taking a photo of the original wiring layout and potentiometer positions. This will help you restore everything correctly during reassembly.

Before Starting

Make sure you have already removed the Inspire pickguard before replacing the potentiometers. For detailed instructions, refer to Workshop #204: How to Remove the Inspire Pickguard .

Part 01

Replace the Small Potentiometer

The small potentiometer uses a different structure from the large potentiometer, so careful handling is required during removal and installation.

01

Unplug the Connectors

Flip the pickguard over and locate the three connectors attached to the back of the small potentiometer.

Carefully disconnect these connectors before removing the potentiometer. Avoid pulling directly on the wires to prevent damage.

02

Mark the Wires

Before continuing, mark the connectors or take a clear reference photo of their original positions.

This will make the reinstallation process easier and help ensure every connector returns to the correct location.

03

Remove the Knob

Use a hex key to loosen the set screw on the side of the knob.

Once loosened, the knob can be removed from the potentiometer shaft.

04

Loosen the Nut

After removing the knob, use a suitable socket wrench to loosen the hex nut securing the potentiometer.

Once the nut is removed, the small potentiometer can be taken out from the pickguard.

Install the replacement potentiometer by reversing the same steps: secure the nut, reinstall the knob, and reconnect the connectors.

Part 02

Replace the Large Potentiometer

The large potentiometer uses a different structure, but the replacement process is straightforward with the right steps.

01

Unplug the Connector

Locate the PU connector on the back of the large potentiometer and carefully disconnect it before removing the component.

02

Remove the Knob

The large potentiometer uses a press-fit knob without a set screw.

To remove it safely, wrap a soft polishing cloth around the base of the knob and gently pull upward. This helps protect the pickguard surface while removing the knob.

03

Remove the Potentiometer

After removing the knob, you will see the special mounting component securing the potentiometer.

Although there is a dedicated tool for removing this part, you can also loosen it manually. Hold the end of the potentiometer with one hand and secure the black plastic component on the shaft with the other hand.

Turn the component counter-clockwise until it loosens, then remove the large potentiometer completely.

Install the new potentiometer by reversing the same process: secure the mounting component, reinstall the knob, and reconnect the PU connector.

Final Check

Make Sure Everything Is Installed Correctly

✓ Confirm that all connectors are securely attached.

✓ Check that both potentiometers are installed in the correct orientation.

✓ Make sure the knobs and mounting components are properly tightened before testing.

The reference photo taken before starting the replacement process can help confirm that every component has returned to its original position.

Once everything is secured and connected, your Inspire is ready to play again.
